Our Visit to Daraga Church: A Touching Experience

During our trip to Daraga Church, also known as the Church of Our Lady of the Gate, we were struck by its beauty and the peaceful feeling it gave us. Located on a hill above Daraga town, this historic church offered stunning views of the famous Mayon Volcano, making our visit feel even more special.

The outside of the church is beautifully decorated with carvings and religious designs that tell stories of the region’s deep Christian faith. It also has few vendors and wide space of parking area that has the amazing view of Mayon Volcano.

Inside, the church felt like a peaceful place for quiet thought. The simple yet respectful decor, with symbols of faith all around, made the 11 AM mass we attended feel very moving. We felt connected to everyone there through the shared prayers and worship.

We took lots of pictures after the mass and interestingly so, there’s woman who asked for alms. We don’t usually give alms to as it is discouraged in Cebu. But I cave in and gave her a 50 peso bill.

The sun was scorching hot so I was squinting the whole time and I was asked, “Are you angry?” Of course I answered NO. LOL

The same happens with my friends, Christian and Nina- they told her that we’re together so the alms was from the 3 of us. Then suddenly the woman pat them in the shoulders- except me. It’s a culture thing that if someone pats you, it’s a must that you should pat them back as it’s a sign that you’re warding off evil that has been given to you by the person who tapped you.

What an experience! We got scared there a bit.

Conclusion

Daraga Church in Albay is a testament to the enduring legacy of faith, resilience, and cultural heritage in the Philippines.
